GRADES

GRADES:

Let’s begin with the assumption that all of you are interested in the subject at hand and want (dare I suggest, eagerly want) to be here. That eagerness, evidenced by attendance, active participation, thoughtful responses to peer work/outside reading/listening, and timely fulfillment of assignments, will warrant an “A.” So let’s start with that: a final grade of “A.” As I discover that some of you want to be here more than others, or, hazard the thought, don’t want to be here at all, I will adjust your final grade accordingly.

Attendance and participation are VITAL. Students are expected to promptly and fully attend every class and contribute constructively to all discussion and activities. If you know that you will be absent or late, please send me an email at least 24 hours prior to class whenever possible.

You have one freebie. Grades will drop a half-letter with two absences and another half-letter for each additional absence.

Students are responsible for obtaining assignments and notes for classes missed from fellow students.

Attendance will be taken at the beginning of each class (note: three tardies equal one absence). Again, students are expected to attend all classes, but if you must miss one, please use the University absence reporting website https://sims.rutgers.edu/ssra/ to indicate the date and reason for your absence. An email is automatically sent to me.

EXTRA CREDIT:

INSIDE THE WRITERS HOUSE. Again, one or two sessions will be scheduled during our regular class period. Any additional attendance beyond these sessions will serve as extra credit. Calendar linked here.

Other extra credit opportunities will no doubt present themselves as the semester progresses.
